As most know I was meeting Dupree in Cancun for 4 days
I initially was going to Cancun for 4 days solo before a biz trip and Dupree said he'd meet me
My biz trip got pushed back so I made a real holiday out of it
And booked 4 days Cancun, 3 days Holbox Island and 3 days in Tulum

Dupree planned on going 2 days before me and staying in another All-inclusive hotel

My flight was for the 7th because I had a dinner with my new big boss on 6th
Well that got cancelled and when I woke up on the 6th for work it was pouring rain again

Told work I'm heading Cancun a day early, changed my flight and booked a night at the hotel Rob was staying at
Since I did it all so fast I didn't have time to tell Rob

So he was a bit surprised to see me at the lobby bar that night 5555

We switched to a nicer, bigger all-inclusive but although the setting of the hotel was nice it wasn't all that great
Wasn't bad just not great
Food was just average
I didn't think it was as bad as Rob did but agreed with him that it seems they go 90% there with the food when just that other 10% would make it good

We met a few people we hung out a bit with but honestly we didn't do much
The last 2 nights we were back up in our room before 11pm

We did take the ferry 20mins over to Isla Mujeres
We had planned to stay there 2yrs ago but our plans got rained out

It is a pretty cool island with gorgeous blue water and tons of restaurants and bars

Rob was smitten and I would definitely go back and check it out for a few nights

We went to a gorgeous beach club on the water and all you had to do was buy food and drinks with no minimum limit set
I thought that was incredible given how nice it was..

I am now at the local bus station waiting for 2hr ride to Holbox
The station is pretty nice and very efficient

I will post pictures later

I had never been to Cancun and never wanted to go

But 2yrs ago when Dupree and I went to Mexico I hung out there and waited for him while his flight arrived

And I only decided to go here because it was originally supposed to 4 days, not enough time to go elsewhere

But I don't think I will be back
Not bashing Cancun, just there is so many better options in Mexico

Although young kids would have a blast
The party scene is like Bangla Rd x100

One other thing
We decided to hit downtown Cancun for the 'real Mexico"
I've never been so throughly hounded by touts ever
They wouldn't leave us alone

We lasted less than 5mins and jumped in a taxi and got our of there

One good thing about Cancun is they have a great public bus system that costs about 18baht and comes every 2mins

Dont want to sound dumb but what is a "all-inclusive hotel"
As someone said
You pay for your room and everything is included
But they are notorious for having mediocre food

I only ever did one prior in Cuba and actually had fun
I was solo and met a group of people and we hung out every day at pool and dinner

I only did it this time because it was only going to be 4 days

The food was mediocre but although I like good food I can make due with mediocre
Dupree not so much!

One thing I find with AI resorts is most people are looking to have fun and hang out and meet others
Not like a regular hotel where everyone keeps to themselves

Holbox Island

Holbox has been on my radar for a couple of years.
People describe it as Tulum 20 years ago

I saw pictures and video and it looked exactly what I always describe as a "beach town"

Gorgeous water, dirt roads all throughout the town, tons of bars and restaurants in town and on the beach

So once my holiday was extended I knew I wanted to go to Holbox
It was 2hr15min bus ride
ADO buses are all over Mexico and it's what you'd call a 1st class bus.
I booked online and chose my seat
It was around 400baht

The ride was pretty boring because it is a new road basically cut into the jungle to get to this region

After the bus ride....it's a short 20min ferry over to Holbox
The ferry was completely full

Well Holbox is exactly how I pictured it
Dirt roads, gorgeous beach and tons of good restaurants and bars
But like always in Latin America you are surrounded by locals living their lives
Schools, little kids walking home from school

Tonight I am going on a Bioluminescent tour they say is pretty good
So will report back on that....

Here is some pics of Holbox

M26 Are you on the Pacific Ocean Side ? The water looks Dirty like Thailand .
You think that water looks dirty??
I've never seen water as blue and clear as that in Thailand
Although the beach itself is pretty rustic
But I'd say it's probably the most relaxing beach I've ever been on

The dark spots you see are seaweed
Unfortunately Mexico has a big problem with seaweed although what you see in the pictures is nothing compared to when it's really bad

It's the Gulf of Mexico

I think its got something to do with elevation and orientation of the beach.

You should see the beaches in Adelaide. I was there last week and there are literally mountains of seaweed piled up on the beach. You have to walk ankle deep in seaweed to enter the water.

That seaweed is a GREAT fertilizer if you stick it in your garden bed in the early winter so it rots into compost before planting and growing season in the spring.

The seaweed (Sargassum) problem on the Mexican beaches tends to be a little later in the year in think. Then it’s a real problem.
Holbox looks like a great place to relax for a few day. I’ll be interested to see what you think about it there. Enjoy!

It's a huge problem in Mexico
It's killing some resort towns

Last time we were in Tulum it was like 3ft high and smelt horrible

The high end resorts pay people to rake it and bury it

But when going to Mexico you really have to check if it's bad where you want to go

It isn't that bad on Holbox right now and I actually think it adds to the rustic charm of the beach
