In the places that I am staying
Tulum and Holbox

They have the traditional Mexican places but are also doing amazing higher end Mexican also

Plus a lot of other restaurants will cook bistro type food with a Mexican influence

The food in both Holbox and Tulum are all amazing

Unfortunately I did not sleep a wink last night
Although I was physically exhausted I just couldn't fall asleep then it became almost an anxiety thing because I was counting the hours I would need to sleep to be able to drive to Bacalar

Since I slept only 1 hour it would definitely not be safe to make a day trip like this

So not going to see Bacalar this trip

But I then decided it's for the best
I will be back this year and will do a proper visit for 2/3 days down there

Last time you'll rough it in a tent then?
Had nothing to do with that
I went all out yesterday all day in the sun
So I think my body was just overrunning
Then , as I said, it became an anxiety thing trying to get to sleep
But every hour went by

Rented a scooter and will have it for this afternoon and until 2pm tomorrow so there is a few things around here I want to check out

Didn't you take any tramadol ? :)
I didn't want to be drowsy for driving the car all day
Should have taken one at 10pm
But didn't think about it
After 12am I thought it wouldn't be safe

Oh well

Totally Mexican.
pretty sure they were invented in Spain/Portugal amd made their way over to Latin America with migration...

not a bad deal as they got coffee and chocolate in return...which go particularly well with them...

why do you have tramadol ... horrible stuff , I took it very briefly when I had sciatica , made me feel horrible ... a friend has been on it for ages for severe back issues , but he is slowly trying to get off it ...

To abuse it to get high 5555

Only bought it here
And yes it does make you feel real loopy

Hence why I didn't take any and will be leaving most of what I bought here when I leave

The pharmacy across the street has a list of drugs you can buy
Xanax, valium, codeine, and other strong drugs
I was surprised I thought Mexico tightened up on those drugs
I didn't buy any.....was tempted though

My 2nd night in Tulum I headed to the local downtown Tulum
That's what great about Tulum....it's broken up between the downtown local area and the high end beach rd tourist area
And has a great wide bike path to ride between each other
Downtown Tulum, or Tulum Pueblo, is hopping! Even more so than 2yra ago
So many more tourists seem to be staying in downtown and hanging out in downtown, even many tourist families.
It has tons of restaurants with a great mix of local and western places
Bakeries, ice cream shops, you name it....

Plans changed.....

My 3rd and last full day in Tulum I decided I would rent a car and take a day trip 2hrs each way to Bacalar Mexico
It has a gorgeous lagoon
I was going to wake up at 7am and leave early
But the night before I had insomnia bad.
That never happens to me but no matter what I did I couldn't fall asleep
I ended up getting an hour of sleep

So there was no way I could take that long drive so I was bummed
And worse, I still had to get up and go into downtown to return my ebike!
I did that, bought my bus ticket back to airport
Taxis aren't cheap here and right by the bus station I saw MB for rent
I figured it i rented it up until the time I had to go to the bus station the next day it made sense
MB rentals are also not cheap. I paid about 1500 baht to rent the MB for 29 hours

I went back to my tent/hotel and needed to sleep
I ended up sleeping until 1pm

I woke up a bit bummed but decided to make the most of it.
There was a lagoon about 25mins away

So I hopped on the MB
I stopped at a local seafood restaurant in town and it was amazing!
Lots of locals but it's on the foodies radar also so many tourists
I know how thag feels as a local in Boston
You are happy to see your local place do well but hate it overrun by foodie tourists like me 5555

I read mixed reviews about the Lagoon but wanted to check it out
It isn't no Bacalar but it was pretty friggin nice!
Being a Sunday afternoon it was about 80% Mexican families
It was nice seeing them have fun together.
I would imagine if you went on a weekday morning you'd have the place to yourself.
After that I hit a couple more cenotes on the way back.

Now I've been to Tulum twice for now a total of 8 days and never made it onto the actual main beach in Tilum!
Last time too much seaweed and this time didn't go until my 2nd day
Wow......what a beach!
Not only is it beautiful water with the most gorgeous palm trees lined all down the beach
I'd say it is the most happening beach I've ever been on
Just a massive stretch of hotels and beach clubs with so many people hanging out.
Now some of the beach clubs are douchehead central
But you can find some nice chill ones too.

I found a hotel that was happy to let me use a chair while I bought beers from them.

Coming off the beach in a pretty euphoric state I get on my MB and it won't start!
And I am all the way down the beach rd strip
Fxuk!
Looks like I ran out of gas
I hail a taxi and have him drive me to gas station
With all the traffic it took me an hour there and back and about 700baht!
But I wasn't going to let it ruin my mood. The taxi had a good radio station on and I just looked out the window checking out all the restaurants we drove by
Get back to the bike, put the gas in and it still won't start!
Motherfcuker
Now I am starting to lose my shit a bit
This young Mexican kid walks by and tries to help me.
Kick start won't work.....then he plays with a bunch of buttons and I just had one of the buttons off!
So don't even think I needed to go get the gas 555

Oh well.....back in my happy mood

Dinner next.....

Dinner
I read about this high end Mexican place and was thinking about trying it out.
I drove by and it had a great bar which I prefer to eat at and a good vibe so I stopped in
Sat next to one other guy on the far end of the bar looking into the restaurant (this comes into play)

I ordered a beer and just taking it all in.
They playing nice chill music and people are dining....
Then the music changes to a sort of jungle meet.
I thought "that's an odd change" but oh well

All of a sudden I see someone moving around and it's a girl in lizard mask doing this interpretative dance moves flailing around.
The look on the diners faces that were near her were priceless.. .
She's done and takes off the mask and sits at the bar across from us and is sort of now doing a pantomime show of drinking and fussing about
Then! Another dancer comes from the entrance and they went into a full on interpative dance performance for 15mins with the owner making all types of sounds with his drink shaker and cutting board at the bar
It was wild, stunning, funny and then kind of good but so fuxking weird
At one point the owner pointed out that the song playing was singing about the meal I had ordered!!

Me and my new friend Dave from NYC both agreed we were so happy to be on the far end of the bar with a barrier between us

What a wild scene!

PS....the dish I ordered, Stuffed Jalepenos, was absolutely amazing!
One of the best dishes I ate in years
And the owner was so passionate about his food it was cool to see

PSS.....I will never be able to fully explain that show 555

That's that for the TR

I really love the Quintana Roo area of Mexico

I decided I want to try and get back for 4/5x per year
Short 4-5 days trips after biz trips back East

The only thing is there isn't direct flights to/from Vancouver at some times of the year

Thoughts.....
I actually think, even though Mexico, is a very touristy country, I still think it's underrated as a tourist destination
Great natural attractions, great food, good people, very good infrastructure

Infrastructure.....the roads are excellent and such a pleasant drive

Holbox......I loved Holbox but the only thing is not a ton to do during the day. So that would be more of a 3 day chill weekend place for me.

Tulum.....I LOVE Tulum. The only downsides is the traffic on Beach Rd. It really does make you lose your relaxed vibe at times.
And the costs. But the cost on Beach Rd can be offset by splitting your time between Beach Rd and downtown

Tourists.....I'd say the majority of tourists in both Holbox and Tulum are Spanish speaking. I'd say 75% almost

For sure you could

In Tulum there has been massive development between the beach and downtown with very nice apartment buildings
So prices are pretty decent

This is a nice decent sized brand new place
5min bicycle ride to both beach and downtown
3bdrm for 6mil thai baht

https://www.century21global.com/property/tulum-tulum-quintana-roo-77780-mexico-C21118370953-USD
would say the quality of build is so far above what you get in most Thai developments, IMO

I don't know how rentals because so many owners try and do Airbnb so don't know what they would charge monthly in that development, Aldea Zama

But you could also tent decent local places in downtown for probably very cheap

Women.....I don't think there is any p4p but the women tourists are gorgeous. It's like the Instagram capital of the world so women flock there with friends
The Latin tourists are beautiful.
As well as the many Latin girls from other countries that live and work in Tulum

So maybe if lived there you'd find girls to your liking
