My former mother in law who i nicknamed the Empress Dowager (after her husband, who I loved dearly, died) came from a wealthy Hong Kong Chinese family with servants etc etc...when I put food before her she didn't like she would just look me up and down then look the food up and down (both of us with contempt) until I removed it from the table/her view...without as much as a word

Paulie's got this fkn easy...55

So she isn't really going to be sick? Just doesn't like the taste?
I'm surrounded by it

My wife is like that, not as bad as her Mom
But I pick her up at work every night and she comes out like she's dying
Something is always hurting her

My brother and sister LOVE the attention of being hurt or sick
Both practically beg for surgeries....

My brother got diagnosed with diabetes recently
I legit think he was happy so he could tell everyone......

And I'm as old school as it gets
Wouldn't go to the doctor if my arm was falling off

They all drive me nuts with their shit

Probably best you don't live back in Boston then... at least you're sorta out of it where you are...

Though now you have the Thai equivalent...

This is a good place to let it all out...

Still can't work out how you didn't end up nuts too... as you grew up in the same house as some of them? What was the point of difference?

I'd be fine living in Boston

I don't know if you know this about me, but I'm not afraid to speak my mind 555

So I just tell them how I feel

Plus when we stayed in Boston a few summers ago
Even though I am grew up less than 10mins from downtown Boston it's like 2 different worlds

We will spend 2-3 months/year there when retired

I don't think the MIL ever wants to go back to Thailand!

She keeps saying she doesn't miss Thailand when people ask

The issue is my wife bought the house in Nonthaburi and sort of just stuck my MIL there where she doesn't know anyone

I think my wife's attitude/thought process was you live in a very nice house and should be happy

I am going to suggest we sell the house and buy land in the village so we can start the process of filling in the land

I was always planning on having a guest house on our property anyways

So if we could build a basic 2 bedroom guest house on the land or even on her Aunt's land if it can be moved

We gave the MIL the option of doing this in the village or buying the house before

But I think now that she will be sending considerable time in Vancouver the next 6-7 years then heading to the village when she's back in Thailand might be more appealing to her

Do you think it's possible that she loves not being in Thailand? Compared to what she's doing now?

I thought I kind of said that??? 😀

But I don't think she has ever been that happy at the new house in Nonthaburi

She lived in Samut Prakan for 20 years
She didn't have a ton of friends but she knew most people in the neighborhood

She had her electric scooter that she drove to markets
She's been in Nonthaburi for almost 3 years and never used that scooter.....she doesn't know the area

Her sons and other daughter are in Samut Prakan
She used to see them daily, now sees them about once a month

But I do think she likes Vancouver
I think she really likes Ao's friends
And if she could legit work here I think she'd happily live here full time

She's lonely. When I was laid off right at Covid. I had to make sure I went out of the house. Even the grocery store was a social event..55 I do love the pool playing competition. That takes care of 3 days a week of being out.

Yeah and I don't think my wife factored that in or thought about it

In her Mom
Her Mom lives in a house she could never dream she would so that should be enough

My wife also didn't think that my wife can get in the car and go somewhere
Go to the village or wherever

I don't care either way if they want to keep the house for some time more or sell it and start in the village

Although selling a house in Thailand is no sure thing and could take a while

Although our house is one of the nicer ones in the neighborhood (not saying much)

What part of Samut Prakan? A friend lives in this development and was showing us places around the area last trip.

By the way
This was the reasoning why the move to Nonthaburi

We wanted to stay in the 3mil range and we could only find townhouses or much older small houses in Samut Prakan for that price

And in Nonthaburi we could buy a detached house for the same price range

As I said before and was telling my wife the other day
Her Mom has been a pleasure to have

My only real complaint is the consistent slightly unpleasant smell of her food and cooking

She definitely seems to eat more pungent foods than my wife
And seems to use a ton of oil.....

So the smell is not "knock you over"

Just a steady slightly unpleasant smell for me.........

Set her up with a gas cooker on the balcony, problem solved as long as doors are closed of course.
