Some friends were in Bangkok , on 23rd floor ... parts of room ceiling collapsed and water from pool came down into room ... they are still waiting outside for aftershocks ... very scary

We had 2 minor earthquakes here in Vancouver last month
My building shook a bit(felt like upstairs neighbours jumping up and down)

And that was scary enough

I can't imagine experiencing something like this!

Literally unnoticeable in Roi Et, although some in high rise buildings reported feeling a swaying feeling.
No buildings were evacuated.

In May 2010, I was in Guilin China walking over a large bridge crossing a river, and it felt as if I was on a ship in rough seas, where the floor would rise and fall making it unsteady to walk. At the time I thought the bridge was bouncing due to the volume of traffic crossing and had been designed to do so.
30 minutes later arriving back at the hotel, I then learned of a 7.9M earthquake in Sichuan Province at exactly the same time I was on that bridge and everyone had been evacuated from buildings, which also apparently swayed.
Guilin was 1,200Km from the epicentre.
Aftershocks continued for 3 hours afterwards, and it was evening before we were allowed back into the hotel.
Internet and phone communications were down for 3 days, when I was then contacted by the British Embassy in China via a request from my family in the UK as to my wellbeing. The earthquake made the news in the UK and those with any family members visiting China were asked to contact the Home office at that time.
It was a relief to my family in the UK after 3 days of waiting to discover I had been located and was fine.

Over 140 confirmed dead in Mynamar so far, and I expect that to rise as building rubble is cleared.
The wife states 7 killed in Bangkok from the building that collapsed.

Imagine being in one of those buildings thinking... this is it. Or on the elevated freeways watching the road swaying and waiting for the fucker to collapse.

Stuff like this doesn't usually worry me to much, but knowing some of the standards employed in Thai construction and seeing what happened here, I'm not sure I'll be in anything over 2 or 3 floors in the future.
Still, it's all pretty random. Could get wiped out by a truck or bus with 'brake failure' just as easily.

You not felt earthquakes in the BOP Cuzzy? I experienced a 7.2 in Otago in 1987 or 88 can't remember... power went first.. followed by the whole apartment complex swaying... though the one in Turkey in 93 felt worse as I was quite high up in a hotel... and Turkey infrastructure is not great. It's a pretty helpless feeling.

Luck of the draw Cuz, don't let it worry you, enjoy yourself 🍺🍺🍺

IMHO that BKK building was possibly of poor construction as it pancaked in a way that suggests a lack of support column strength or insufficient concrete curing times.
Bangkok is built on a flood plain and river delta and more susceptible to damage from a quake compared with CM.

The tower that collapsed seemed like the top floor went first and that triggered the pancaking possibly due to fresh/green/uncured concrete and the lack of the balancing weights because of the stage it was at.

Seems strange a newly constructed tower could go and older much heavier ones not?
