When the new Thai visa rules come in, does anyone know if it will then be possible to get a 60 day visa in the uk (in my case) before traveling?. I know you can get a 30 to 60 day at IT Square but i'd rather not have to trek out to Lak Si

Yes no problems. You don't even need to wait for rule changes. If unsure and want to be safe, just pre-apply for the 60 day visa anyway to cover yourself regardless of what happens.

Or if you think your travel might coincide with the changes and you want to stay longer, assume 30 days and apply for an extension. Depending on how long you're planning on staying. If no more than 60 days, then apply for the visa from the UK and then what happens with the exemption rules is neither here nor there for you.
