I did the RV on my American trip with my buddy Chris about 5 years ago was a blast.

Have done a few local trips with the kids, Kalgoorlie was the last and we are off to Albany week after next. (5.5hrs south). The kids are lay back no issue traveling with them.

Maybe my 3 or 4 days should be a week or more, I'm not in a rush. We have friends in HH and Bangkok so could make some stops. KR suggested awhile back to send our luggage to CM once we land in Phuket. We have a fair bit of luggage you know two bikes and spare parts.......oh and the kids stuff.

I'm not good at long days driving, 4hrs straight is about my limited but the wife can drive as long as it not a stick.

Are the kids hassling you to go back to Kalgoorlie yet? 😄

Actually they are so we said will do Albany

Funny story, step son wanted to be a miner, once he went to the Kalgoorlie museum decided it was too much hard work and said to his sister......you can be a gold digger looks like easy work...

Albany I'm down for.

Done the Kal drive more than one. Staring at that damn pipeline the whole way and back drives me nuts.

Kids researched the pipe line, stopped a few times along the way for the normal Asian 100 photos each stop.

4 days would be a huge rush for that drive, IMO

I'd take at least a week

Stop South of Hua Hin like Anmeno's area, around there

Stop in HH
Stop in Kanchanburi

Stop at Sai Yok National Park

What's your rush, you are retired
Unless the kids need to get settled in CM
My area is a detour if the goal is to use the shortest road to Chiang Mai, but it is an area that not to many foreigners come to see so it is maybe perfect for a road trip, I use about 5 hours from Patong.

We have stopped a few times on drives around the area
All very local
You can find some good deals for hotels

One beach we really liked
Good restaurants on beach

It had a German sounding name
Can't remember it

In my twenties I crossed the US six times from 1976 to 1980. No phone. No credit card. Crappy cars. What a blast...

Just did a road trip.....plane to Bangkok drive back to Chiang mai. Total 1320 plus 213kms kms running around total 1533kms.

Took some now so known roads including some off road and a dam crossing thanks to maps from a buddy.

Route 1) Bangkok to HH, took the coastal rd, not a lot to see besides salt farms

Route 2 HH to Kanchanaburi, mainly highway but nice dive. Spent a few days around Kanchanaburi but had to leave before Paulie arrived....555

Australian government have done a great job of the Hellfire pass area, really looks good and free to enter.

Route 3, Hellfire pass to Nakhon Sawan........this was a interesting drive and maybe one of the best drives I have done in Thailand.

We stayed over night up near Hellfire pass, the day was going to be long.

First planned stop was Erawan falls but when we arrived it was over 1000k to enter, seen plenty of waterfalls before and wanted to get to Nakhon Sawan before darks so didn't go in.

Once past the Erawan falls the road got smaller towards Sinakharin dam. This dam was massive maybe 90kms long. The road along the left side of the dam was in good condition and nice views to the dam sometimes.

Eventually we turned off the sealed rd to a off road trail. The off road trail was ok about half way then got a bit rough. Easy doable in a 4wd or a rental small car with some technical line choice....55

The dam crossing

All the family knew was that we are stopping at the dam for a swim.

Once we arrived they realised the car was going on the boat.

400b car and 4 people took almost a hr to cross the dam. Boat can take 9 cars at once but only two this trip.

Once over the other side of the dam it was another 4 or 5kms of off road then on the way to Nakhon Sawan for the night.

Nakhon Sawan is a nice place, lots of restaurants including burger shops, Italian, sushi and a bar area.
