Songkran 2024

A second night of widespread rain across the North has ensured a fabulous day for all festivities in Chiang Mai. 1,000's of people have inundated the various events since yesterday with Thapae Roads 'water tunnel' proving extremely popular. Think Park, opposite Maya, has drawn large crowds for several nights and Central Airport also has a concert taking up all the outdoor parking, a nightmare for shoppers and evening diners. Traffic chaos across the cbd this morning due to a delightful parade of girls on bikes >

Unfortunately there's at least one gang of pickpockets still working the crowds - 2 will flank a victim as distraction while 2 others pick wallets or jewelery. One Korean man was arrested Friday after grabbing a gold chain and his accomplice arrested at the airport.

My guess, and it is just that.
Making up for the lost years of Covid. Even after Covid restrictions were dropped, many Thai's were reluctant to go out to crowded places.
perhaps that fear is gradually subsiding?

They seem more worried about air pollution than covid these days.
PM 2.5 (very small pollution particles) seems like a national obsession IMHO.

I'd have a blast for one day.....then be done

But the Thais definitely did it up this year!!
Doi Saket have announced a continuance of festivities for next week thru to 27th. Might fizzle out as most businesses resume work on 20th. Certainly a Songkran to remember and may draw more tourists next year.

Songkran road accidents killed 243 people

Source: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/2777465/songkran-road-accidents-killed-243-people?

"Ruangsak Suwaree, director-general of the Probation Department, said that from April 11-16 there were 5,786 traffic violation cases, 96.6% of which involved drink-driving. Bangkok had the most drink-driving cases (493), followed by Samut Prakan (313) and Chiang Mai (302)."
I witnessed a rather unusual but preventable accident on Tuesday morning as I headed to meet a few friends for breakfast.
Stopped at traffic lights at a crossroad, the traffic facing was on green.
To the left, a large wagon had stopped at the red lights, the type that has large outstretched multiple wing mirrors.
A young lad on his motorcycle, riding one-handed whilst trying to text on his phone, comes down the right-hand side of the truck.
Before he came to a stop at the red lights, head down observing his phone, he hits one of the extended wing mirrors with his head, which flips him off the motorcycle which carries on for a couple of metres before it falls over with a crash.
A carrier bag on the handle bars full of groceries just spill across the road.

The lights change to green.
The wagon driver looks, adjusts his wing mirror and drives on.
A couple of pedestrians rush to the lad's aid who was more shocked than hurt, and as they attempt to pick up the spilled groceries, the traffic behind just continues, going around them and his motorcycle, whilst driving over some of the groceries.
Maybe he learnt a valuable lesson to watch the road rather than his mobile, but I doubt it.
Once a dumbo, always a dumbo.

Saved from death by an Amulet no doubt

Arguably the most successful Songkran in many years is over and I think CM locals are now staying home, with empty wallets, as roads and malls are eerily quiet. Nice! :)

Doi Saket's planned 2nd week of festivities is a wash-out with organisers cancelling at the last minute despite selling ~200+ food and drink stall leases. Something rotten there and vendors are rightfully angry.

Of interest, road statistics are as follows:-

Seven dangerous day Songkran 2024 edition for Chiang Mai Province that ended April 17 saw 39 accidents, 45 injuries and three deaths. Accidents were down by 29 over the three year average, injuries were down 20 and deaths were down five.
To the surprise of no one, the majority of accidents involved motorcycles (74.36%) and the main causes were speeding, drunk driving, cutting in and falling asleep behind the wheel.
