The Gardens of Doi Tung

Whilst I was up in Chiang Rai recently I visited these magnificent gardens, here is a bit about the place and then I will post many of the pictures I took.

Between Chiang Rai and Mae Sai along highway 110 is the turn off to Doi Tung (Flag Mountain) From here the road gradually winds its through lush forests and passes Shan, Akha and Lahu hill tribe villages on its way up towards Mae Fah Luang Gardens and The Royal Villa. Also on this mountain you will find Wat Phrahthat Doi Tung, which has become an important pilgrimage spot for buddhists from many countries.

The highlight for most visitors to Doi Tung is the Mae Fah Luang Garden, covering the slopes below the Royal Villa. Formal flower gardens and Rock gardens can be found here are which are changed on a regular basis throughout the year with special displays put on for the annual winter festival between October and April.

The Royal Villa
Built as a summer residence for the Late Princess Mother the Royal Villa at Doi Tung is now preserved as a museum and is open to the public, Used as a base to oversee her work in the Doi Tung development project it is now open to the public and can be visited with a trip to the Mae fah Luang garden.

Beautiful place and a great report... pictures paint a 1,000 words ... :D:D:D

I really enjoyed a visit to Chiang Mai's Botanical Gardens although some of the best flowering plants I've photographed are from Phuket or nearby ...

Beautiful flora, and (here's a heads up guys) the girls are ok too.... jing jing! :)

When i was in CR in Feb I went and had a look at Doi Tung and the Royal Villa. Was a great tour. Noy was running from flower to flower taking photos of every individual flower known to man 555. Personally I am not normally a fan of the gardens and whatnot but really enjoyed Doi Tung.

Thanks for the Photos Rivo

What did the parents think.

Super impressed Ozzy..................I did take them there about 3/4 years ago, I hired a car and headed up from Chiang Mai that time, was a bit more rushed back then as we had so much distance to cover to see the tourist attractions around Chiang Rai

Ive been to Doi Tung about 5 times now over the years and never grow tired of seeing the gardens, there just stunning.
