Interesting thread, I absolutely love trains. It's not only fast and convenient, but it's such a romantic method of travel as well(except maybe in India 55). I've had my eyes on the Trans Siberian trip for a while and it's definitely on my list. Around the world by train sounds amazing.

I haven't flown NYC-Boston in about 8 years

Fly........be there more than 1 hour before, security crazy, seats suck and service horrible

Train.......get there 10mins before, seats are better than 1st class in US, can walk around freely/comfortable and there is a quiet car

Also, trains usually drop you off downtown, planes you need to travel outside to airport

Train travel in europe and Japan is phenomenal....I would use it every time over flying....a few years back I did Berlin to Prague i about 2 and a half very pleasurable hours hotel to hotel....the amount of time spent checking in and waiting for planes is ridiculous these days

However...no way would I use the trains in Thailand...way too slow, unsafe and unreliable....I have spent 3-5 hours waiting on trains here...it would need to be a proper bullet train before I would even think about it

My friend had a long wait at Hua Hin station for a train that never turned up a few years ago. No explanation given 555
I have read somewhere that they are going to build a new rail link from Bangkok to Pattaya. That could be useful.

i've done a few long distance train trips in LOS. overnight a couple of times. met plenty of people along the way. mainly young,female,euro backpacker types.
i thought it was pretty good. had a good sleep while it was stopped somewhere for a hell of a long time in the middle of the night 55

took my PCX on a couple of them to save the long,hard,boring, slog CM>BKK and back again.



everything locked away under the seat..

I caught the Rail Motor from Bangkok to Chiang Mai once, mostly daylight trip. Not a bad trip all round and got to see a bit of the countryside. About 12 hours IIRC

actually my little bloke was conceived that day + or - a day :)

I took the train from Vancouver to Portland in July with my mate Chris. Dupree and M26 took the plane.

Train pulled up in the middle of shiters ditch for 3 hours rest while Dupree and M26 sat in a bar in Portland.

Brought back a memory. When I was working in Bangladesh my mate in the UK suggested we do a "train trip" there. My immediate response was "fark off". Shocking way to travel.

Having said that I have done Singapore to Bangkok twice via train. Great trip. 2 lines up though Malaysia; Jungle line on the east side and the west line.

I've booked a flight from Bangkok to Chiangmai next month but I am thinking of returning by train after a four day visit. From what I've read, the sleeper service over night gets booked up very quickly especially since they introduced new carriages last November. Other than that, the morning Express service gets you into Bangkok for early evening. I will checkout the booking situation when I arrive in CM.

The trains are great for meeting up with the younger backpacker girlies and the day train with just a seat a good way to see the countryside.

I’ve decided to take the number 8 day train leaving CM at 08.50 tomorrow morning. The sleeper service tonight and tomorrow night was fully booked, with only normal seating available. I’ve arranged for my lady friend to pick me up from Bangkok station at 19.25pm but I’ve told her it may be a few minutes late. 555. Should be an experience.
