trip reports on Vancouver Island

I've met a few old riders at the A&W in the morning. They are mostly guys who have retired from the Forest industry and have lots of old tales to tell of days gone by. One fellow, James likes to go for a ride at least a few times a week. We've sort of buddied up and cruise around together on all the many twisty roads in the valley.

One of James friends, Mike, used to have a V-Strom like mine when he was living in New Zealand, but Mike hasn't ridden in a couple of years because he is still putting his old, 1973 Honda cruiser back together. I offered to loan my V-Strom to Mike so the 3 of us could ride out to Port Renfrew. He gladly accepted.

Neither Mike nor James had seen the famous Red Creek Fir or the giant Spruce tree in the San Juan Valley, so I offered to be the official Tour guide. It was a Canada Day holiday and thousands of people were enjoying the gorgeous, sunny day weather. The road out to Port Renfrew has become very popular with riders after it was paved about 8 years ago. In the summer there is continuous traffic of Harleys and big touring bikes. I prefer to ride my 250 Yamaha because it will travel as fast as you can go on the twisty logging road, but its better for the many off pavement logging roads. There are not too many logging trucks on weekends.

The road into the Red Creek fir is very rough and climbs high over looking the San Juan River valley

We ended the day having lunch at one of the very busy Port Renfrew restaurants.

Reminds me a lot of the central North island of NZ... hills and forests...
Vancouver Island is about 460 km long, and it's more like the west coast of South Island New Zealand. The Pacific ocean side of Vancouver Island is all very rugged with lots of inlets and very few roads. The east side of the island has less inlets and it's a bit drier. About half way up the island the weather changes to a wetter environment.

Btw, off topic, I saw a dog hotel at a night market in Khon Kean. It didnt look terribly successful.

Totally unlike the doggy hotel where Paul sends Quincy. 555

Although many Thais love their dogs, I also see many that are treated poorly and just left to fend for themselves.

The one thing I have a hard time with my Fil, when he disciplines his dogs, he does so with a kick. Strange for such a happy guy, always laughing.

I would think it would only possibly work in Bangkok

Although it also seems most people who own dogs in Thailand they are small dogs and they travel with them

She makes a mint

And I bet if I opened one tomorrow I'd be making a mint in no time

The demand for dog care is huge
