What's it like on Samui at the moment?

I have stayed in Choeng Mon and Mae Nam a few years ago.

In Choeng Mon I stayed at the White House in Choeng Mon Beach
Hotel is on the beach, a few bars along the beach and some hotels along the sand where there was some good food on offer.
If you want quiet, you will get it there

In Mae Nam, I am pretty sure this is where we stayed, we had one of the beachfront Villas, I will ask my partner if this was it. I am pretty sure it is.
Maenam Villa Hotel
Very quiet place and a few cool old style bars up the beach, some bars in town and some good places to eat.

In Bohput, we have stayed at the Bandara
Is close to Fisherman's village and the hotel is bang on the beach

I have no idea what is open at present, but might give you some idea what is around

Thanks Chelski. Have gone with Melia on Choeng Mon. It's quite new and well placed on the beach. Will decide on where to stay next once I'm on Koh phangan.

An excellent update. Didn’t know Chris was a Samui resident. I wonder if Khun Nels ever run into him over the years.

He's got a Canadian accent, and he always sounds stoned 55. So didn't figure him for a loud one.

Bit of a shill. I never warmed up to him, but liked his detailed Samui update. He seems to genuinely love the island.

Chaweng definitely seems to have bounced back, though not really my scene. I'm planning a trip to see Samui soonish... there will probably be no avoiding Big Bad Bangkok due to flight arrangements, but I'll probably limit my stay to just a night, or maybe go straight through.

Chaweng was plenty busy when I was there in May with Covid restrictions still somewhat around

Would be interesting to see Lamai
That was insanely dead

The most hard hit I saw anywhere in Thailand

Managed to find the same old bungalow I stayed in once at Coconut 55.

It's basic, but its right on the beach and good enough for me. The nostalgia of going back, and then leaving again is going to make me sad this trip.

Angling for remote work. Gonna try a month or so to begin with and see how it goes. Will see.

I'd have to drop responsibilities... would miss walking through production/despatch etc, having a yarn, but that's mostly just to sober me up in the afternoons. Happy to give it up for this office. I really love working, but half days could be ok too. Just need to work on building the political capital. Hard to do when you're a cunt. I'll have to start being nice to some people. God I feel sick already.... 🤮

This is where I've spent the most time in Samui every trip. Bikini is to the right of it. Wifi good. Coconut hab good long time loom. Wifi also good.

I think it's picking up now, but that'd still suit me just fine for this next trip.
yes this was last month

When I say there was at best 10 people on that main street in Lamai, that would be a high estimate

It was like Mad Max shit....

^ accrding to my mates Samui and Lamai have been rammed with people over the last month or so High Season...Scooter renting fot B1k a day if you can get one...the beach as busy as it has been in 5 years...ring road bumper to bumper in sections particularly Mae Nan to Fishermans Village and on to Chaweng..
I could see it building up before I left but this schizzle is nuts..although not unheralded if you look at airfares..they are double what they would normally be around this time....totally bonkers...lools like I may have split at the right time...

What are your long term plans, Nels? Eventually heading back once you've come good?
